HARRY PAWTER

Fostered in Cherry Hill NJ

Brief description: Sweet Harry Pawter is a 10 month old Mastiff/Great Dane mix who has a snuggly disposition and a heart of gold. Just like his namesake, he is The Boy Who Lived, having been rescued as a stray roaming through the forests of North Carolina. Despite a rough start and some on-going orthopedic issues, Harry has a desire to please, a need to cuddle, and a curiosity about the world. He will make an amazing pet to an adult only home.

Puppy Adoption Policy:

To ensure proper house training and socialization, puppies will only be adopted to homes where an adult will not be away more than an hour per day, per month of age of the puppy, up to 6 months.

Puppies will be adopted out on a 'Foster to Adopt' basis. This means that if/when your application is approved to adopt, you sign a contract stating you are fostering the puppy until the time it is neutered/spayed at your expense. Giant breed puppies should not be spayed/neutered before 12 months of age. All non-giant breed puppies must be spayed/neutered by the age of 6 months, unless otherwise recommended by your veterinarian. We will amend the Foster-to-Adopt contract to make the puppy legally yours, only when we receive a spay/neuter certificate from you or your veterinarian. If the puppy is not spayed/neutered as required, we will take possession of the puppy once again.

Likes: Food! Harry is a growing boy, and is highly food motivated.

Dislikes: Sleeping in on weekends (this guy is an early bird).

Personality: He’s a typical giant breed puppy, and loves to play for a bit, only to fall soundly asleep a moment later. He has been curious about everything, and looks to his foster dog siblings to learn how to be a dog. A typical Velcro dog, he wants to follow his people everywhere, and he loves to climb into laps for a closer snuggle.

Temperament: Highly biddable, Harry is driven to please. He likes to be a little silly while playing, but is mostly a couch potato. He defers to the other dogs at his foster home.

Energy level: Medium-Low. Just like all puppies, he has bursts of energy, but they don’t last long. A short walk or some playtime in the yard is enough to tire him out.

Favorite activities: Being wherever you are! He will follow you to the kitchen and the bathroom, watch tv with you, and snore quietly at your feet while you work. He hasn’t quite figured out what to do with toys, but does enjoy sitting nicely for a treat.

Good with cats, dogs, and kids over 16?: Yes, yes, and yes. Harry’s foster family includes both male and female dogs, cats, and teenagers. He also did well when we visited a farm, and wasn’t bothered by any of the livestock or chickens.

Not good with: Nothing so far!

Housetrained: Yes

Crate trained: Yes. Will follow verbal commands to go into his crate during breaks and nighttime. He will occasionally sit down and give you puppy eyes (“But mom! I’d rather stay out and play!”), but a gentle nudge is all it takes to get him headed inside.

Challenges: Harry has several health issues that are a work in progress. He is severely underweight and anemic, but is on the up-swing. More serious are his orthopedic issues. His left front elbow was broken at some point before coming into the rescue and it healed incorrectly, leading to a substantial limp. He also demonstrates some stiffness in his hip on the same side. He will undergo extensive testing and evaluations in the coming weeks to explore his best options for living a full and happy life. Due to his injury, he has an awkward gait and difficulty with steps.

Any Medical issues? Very low body condition, anemia, orthopedic

What would be the best kind of home? Harry is a “people person” and loves to be around family (both humans and pets). He would do best in a single story home where he has another dog to play with, and humans who can devote time to his medical needs. He is more biddable than an average mastiff, but giant breed experience is still necessary.
