Maximus is a 170-lb hunk who came to us as an owner surrender from PA. He is house trained, crate trained, and is very good when riding in a car. He sleeps through the night and does not mind being in a crate for long periods. Likes: Company, walks, food driven, car rides Dislikes: Prefers not to be alone; having another dog for company helps him. Personality: Confident Temperament: He’s good with people; he seems aloof with people he doesn’t know, affectionate with people he knows. He challenged a bit initially, but quickly started following his foster mom’s requests. When outside, interesting noises or smells cause him to be on guard somewhat, he requires slower introductions to adjust. Energy level: Moderately energetic. Favorite activities: Going on walks, car rides Good with cats, dogs, and kids over 6? In his foster home, he’s been good with a mastiff foster sister. In another volunteer’s home he’s been good with both male and female large breed dogs. He can eat and take treats next to his foster sister mastiff without any problem. He’s curious about cats and has been seen lunging at them playfully a few times, which scared the cats. His foster mom believes he may be playful with them, which could be problematic given his size. He has not been around children. When taking treats from a hand, it looks like he will swallow the whole hand; his foster is working with him on this when taking treats gently. Not good with: If food is out that he can reach, he will get it. He will eat other animals’ food if he can get to it- he is an expert counter surfer that will require some manners. Housetrained: Yes! He will relieve himself when loose in the yard or on leash. Crate trained: Yes! He crates easily with food or a treat. He will sometimes whine or bark for a bit. He is ok with being crated for a work day. Obedience trained: He does well with sit, down, no, leave it. Challenges: He’s huge! He needs 54-inch or larger crate and a large vehicle. Any Medical issues? No issues known. What would be the best kind of home? He likes company, at least from another dog if not a person- a canine sibling would be great! He would appreciate someone willing to walk him. He would be fine with someone who wants to crate him while they’re away at work during the day although he may not need to be crated (TBD).
