English Mastiff : : Male
Brief description: Malachi is a gentle giant who just wants to love you. He’s a purebred brindle English Mastiff. He was well cared for by his first family, and came to our rescue through no fault of his own. He may be huge, but he’s a cuddly marshmallow of a dog.
Likes: Smiling, riding in the car with the windows open, leaning on people while they pet him, rope toys
Dislikes: being startled, peanut butter
Personality: very chill most of the time; when he plays, he does still have some puppy in him and will bound around the yard grinning
Temperament: well socialized and even tempered
Energy level: low, with occasional bursts of playfulness
Favorite activities: napping, cuddling while you watch tv, eating treats, drooling
Good with cats, dogs, and kids over 6?: yes, yes, and yes; he is ambivalent towards his foster cat sibling, and allows other dogs to take the lead; he has been fantastic with his foster kids (ages 10 & 14)
Not good with: He doesn’t seem to like it when people come in the door wearing hoods or hats. He can also startle when approached from the side. We suspect all his wrinkly skin around his eyes may block some of his peripheral vision.
Housetrained: yes
Crate trained: working on it; he will go into a crate with no fuss, but does not like to be left alone while crated
Challenges: Malachi is only 18 months old and already 215 pounds, so while he won’t get any taller, he will likely continue to fill out just a bit. He’s really, really big, and his needs are all super-sized...from crates to sweaters to vet bills. Luckily, he’s got a super-sized amount of love to give, too!
Any Medical issues? He is healing from his neuter surgery, and will be re-checked by the vet in a week.
What would be the best kind of home? This big boy needs a family that won’t be intimidated by his size. He adores kids, and would love to be around them. He would benefit from a confident and caring owner who can help him work on his leash skills.
