Cletus will be available once he has gained enough weight to be neutered. Brief Description Cletus is a happy, appropriately 1.5 year old smaller bull mastiff/x, who is looking for an active, fun-loving family to call his own. He was found as a stray in Maryland, completely emaciated, but is otherwise healthy. As soon as he gains more weight, he will be neutered and available for adoption. Cletus is crate trained, sleeps through the night, walks great on a leash, knows some basic commands, and is learning about house rules.
Likes Cletus LOVES peanut butter and will do almost anything for it. He likes his slow feeder busy ball, taking long walks, butt scratches, and spending time with his humans. Cletus likes medium+ dogs and would benefit from another dog who is on his energy level to play with. One of his foster siblings is a cranky senior who isn’t rambunctious anymore, but Cletus has taken her corrections well and learned to just walk alongside her on their daily outings.
Dislikes Cletus does not like being able to see his people but not get to them, and will be sure to tell you about his grievances. He is making progress with the barking, and right now will only do it when he’s crated in the same room as you. Cletus may have prey drive, so cats and small dogs in close proximity are unknown at this time. He has successfully passed them on walks and is learning the “leave it” command to help with impulse control. He has tested well with medium+ dogs.
Personality Cletus has yet to meet a stranger, and is winning people over with his adorable under bite and goofy antics. He is a young dog who needs his play time to burn off energy, but Cletus does settle down and enjoy the little moments with his humans.
Temperament Cletus has taken oral medicines and ear cleaning like a champ, but wants peanut butter in compensation for nail trimmings. He is learning to sit quietly before exiting his crate and while being leashed. Cletus is very food motivated and a quick learner, so his new family should be able to advance his manners and obedience.
Energy Level Cletus likes daily walks, exploring the great outdoors, and is dreaming of finding an avid walker or farm.
Favorite activities Eating peanut butter, hanging with humans, walking in the woods, and curling up with a blanket for naps.
Good with cats, dogs, and kids over 6? Cats – unknown yet. Dogs – only tested with medium, small dogs unknown yet. Kids – unknown yet but probably good
Not good with pigs Has prey drive with pigs. Do NOT recommend him to a home with pet pigs integrated into the pack, but would probably be ok with a farm setting and experienced handler.
Housetrained Working on it. Cletus is not left loose unsupervised and is crated when no one is home, so he hasn’t had the opportunity to have an accident or destroy anything in the house yet. He has counter surfed once while supervised, took correction well.
Crate trained Yes. So far only 1 accident while humans were at work and his tummy was settling, no destruction to crate or bedding/toys.
Challenges Cletus is a barker. Not a fan of nail trimmings but is slowly desensitizing. Food aggression with animals has not been tested
No medical issues
What would be the best kind of home An active home or farm with a similar energy level dog, and competent handler to finish his manners/training.
Fostered in La Plata, MD.
